Early Swirly – New Releases This Week: 05-21-2012

Welcome to another edition of the Early Swirly! This week is kinda hit-and-miss. On one end, you’ve got a game based on a movie (when is that ever a good thing?), and on another you’ve got the “one-hundredth” installment of the Ghost Recon series. Hell, at least Dragon’s Dogma looks pretty sweet.

As my fellow staffer, The Farr, has said before: This is pretty much a filler week. But, what do we have to look forward to from here on out? Hmm.. that’s a tough one. Most of the good stuff doesn’t come out until November (like every year), but it’s a little early to be talking about that.

Anyway, here are the releases for this week:

    Dragon’s Dogma - PS3, Xbox 360

To me, Capcom is one of the best video game companies out there, and this is just another example as to why. The game looks great, and I’m really loving the idea of battling all of those mythological creatures. I don’t usually buy a game without trying it first, unless it’s part of a series that I know already, but the trailer for this game almost convinces me to get it right away.

During its raid on the fishing village of Casadeis, a dragon approaches the hero of the story, telling them that they are the “chosen one,” before proceeding to tear out their heart. Lacking a heart the hero’s death is inevitable. However, through some unknown miracle, the hero is saved from certain death. Now revived as an “Arisen,” the hero is destined to find and kill the dragon that stole their heart. Find out more at http://www.dragonsdogma.com/

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier - PS3, Xbox 360

This game does look like a good one, but to be honest, I’m getting a little sick of the Ghost Recon/Call of Duty/Battlefield genre. Three or four years ago, I would’ve never said that, but when there’s a new installment in each franchise every year, it gets a little old.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier takes place in the near future. A dirty bomb has taken out a Ghost team, and another Ghost team (consisting of Kozak, Ghost Lead, Pepper, and 30k) is tasked with tracking down the source of the dirty bomb. Sorcery - PS3

Hmm.. I’m not sure what to think of this one. The graphics look okay, but the story seems a bit cheesy. Maybe I should consider myself lucky that I don’t own a Playstation 3, otherwise I’d be tempted to rent it or something.

Players take the role of a young sorcerer’s apprentice, named Finn, and must master the arcane arts in order to protect his homeland. The Nightmare Queen has broken the ancient pact with mankind and threatens to cover the land in eternal night, sending her foul minions across the land. Finn, together with the magical cat Erline, must travel through the dark Faerie Kingdoms to save the land from the darkness that has enshrouded it. The world is based on Irish mythology. Men in Black: Alien Crisis - PS3, Xbox 360, Wii

I honestly thought that this game was for the Playstation 2, the graphics are that bad. Once again, another game based on a movie will make many gamers cringe.

We work for highly funded, yet unofficial government agency; our mission is to monitor extra terrestrial activity on Earth… WE ARE THE MEN IN BLACK. Now it’s your turn to suit up as one of us to eliminate the scum of the universe, using an arsenal of futuristic weaponry, incapacitating devices and space-age technology. Your mission is to uncover a new alien plot, scan and identify aliens in disguise, neuralize any accidental civilian human witnesses, and defeat all enemies in order to protect Earth. Experience the over-the-top firepower of the MIB with the next iteration of gun technology and intuitive cover mechanics that add choice to exciting rail shooter gameplay. The weapons, attitude, over-the-top aliens and humor of the Men In Black franchise drive the aesthetics and attitude of this expanded universe game. Visit familiar landmarks and locals to battle unexpected alien presences. Find out more at http://www.meninblackgame.com/
